Zeze Gonzaga (1956)

Columbia LPCB 35030

This first career album by Zezé Gonzaga has been premiered thanks to Edson Mendes in another parallel reality back i 2009.

Here it is again, together with Edson‘s text about the relese, which goes as follows:

” This is her very first 10” LP, in fact a selection of some of her previous 78 rpm’s releases at Columbia.
Zezé is considered one of the greatest Brazilian singers, a kind of singer of singers – or singer of maestros (she was the preferred one from the great Radamés Gnatalli).
Her brilliant career started at the late forties and continued until the last year, when unfortunately she died at the age of 81.”

The tracks are:

Lucien Studart – Ecos do Carnaval (1957)

Sinter SLP 1095

You may wonder, as I did, who the mysterious piano player Lucian (Lucien) Studart might be but, apart from the dilemma if it is Lucian (as written on the sleeve) or Lucien (as printed on the labels),  it is quite simple: Lucien Studart is the original name (or alias) of our old mafioso friend José “Lucky” Luciano whose several career albums you may find displayed in this parallel reality.

Anyway, as Lucien Studart, Lucian has released several recordings in the year 1957, after which he, or his producer, decided to switch the name to the crisp sounding Al Pacino type, namely José Luciano.

The two medleys on this 10′ Lp are presented in the archive as two uninterrupted tracks, as well as 12 individual ones:

Lado A Medley 1:

01. Império do Samba (Zé da Zilda / Zilda do Zé)
02. Leva Meu Samba (Ataulfo Alves)
03. Mundo de Zinco (Wilson Batista / Antônio Nássara)
04. A Fonte Secou (Monsueto / Tufic Lauar / Marcléo)
05. Ai Que Saudades da Amélia (Ataulfo Alves / Mário Lago)
06. Está Chegando A Hora (Tradicional)

Lado B Medley 2:

07. Meu Consolo É Você (Antônio Nássara / Roberto Martins)
08. Não Me Diga Adeus (Paquito/Luis Soberano / João Correia da Silva)
09. Carmelito (Caminito) (Juan de Dios Filiberto / Gabino Coria Peñaloza / Vrs. Henricão / Vrs. Rubens Campos)

Luiz Gonzaga – O Reino do Baiao (1957)

RCA Victor BPL 3055

The famous Luiz Gonzaga has been presented as composer In this parallel reality on a Rildo Hora tribute album: Rildo Hora Interpreta Luiz Gonzaga (1988),

Now we have a career album, his second of altogether (at least) 43, a 10′ LP released back in 1957 for RCA Victor.

Although I do not think that it is necessary to explain anything about such a well known figure, I will point to two texts about him on the back cover:

The first one, signed by Nerço Barbaio and the other signed by E. B. which is a feeble attempt to hide the identity of the writer, who can be no other than Elmo Barros, notorious for his authorship of linear notes printed on RCA Victor releases.

The Baiãos are:

1. Forró No Escuro (Luiz Gonzaga)
2. Moça de Feira (Armando Nunes / J. Portela)
3. Sertão Sofredor (Nelson Barbalho / Joaquim Augusto)
4. Xote das Moças (Nelson Barbalho / Joaquim Augusto)
5. O Delegado no Coco (Zé Dantas)
6. Gibão de Couro (Luiz Gonzaga)

About the existence of Rosita Gonzales I became aware quite a long time ago when I found her name as participant on two albums in the 1991 – 92 project called As Eternas Cantoras do Radio together with Carmélia Alves, Ellen de Lima, Nora Ney, Violeta Cavalcanti and Zezé Gonzaga. Since then I had no opportunity to find any of her career albums and after all the years I forgot about her.
Well, I was pleasantly surprised to receive her first album, a 10′, a short time ago from Pedro & 300discos.

Heleninha Costa (1956)

Copacabana CLP 3078

A short text about Heleninha Costa written by Edson Mendes:

Heleninha Costa was an authentic Radio Queen, although she didn’t win this famous contest and was not so popular as Emilinha, Marlene and Angela Maria.
She was born in Rio de Janeiro, but started her artistic career in 1938 at Radio Clube de Santos and then was contracted by great radio stations from São Paulo. She started to record in 1940 at Columbia and later record many discs for Continental, RCA, Todamerica, Sinter and other recording companies.
Coming back to Rio, she became a star on Cassino Quitandinha and Cassino da Urca, besides one of the main artists of Radio Mayrink Veiga and Radio Nacional. In 1953 she married Ismael Netto, a great composer and leader of Os Cariocas vocal group.
Today her recordings are very difficult to find and she is almost forgotten as many other great artists from the past.
Heleninha died in 2005 at the age of 81.

The 8 songs of this 10′ Lp:

1. Desespero (Eduardo Patané / Floriano Faissal)
2. Quero Dizer-te (Vicente Paiva / Luis Iglesias)
3. Valsinha do Amor (Lúcio Alves / Reinaldo Dias Leme)
4. Sinfonia do Samba (Vicente Paiva / Luis Iglesias / Walter Pinto)
5. Juca (Haroldo Barbosa)
6. Eu Já Disse (Lúcio Alves)
7. Amor Brejeiro (Y. Alain / P. Saka / Vrs. Antônio Maria)
8. O Rio Amanhecendo (Ismael Netto / Antônio Maria)

Nestor Amaral and His Continentals – Brazil (1957)

Golden Tone (USA) C4071-B

This 10′ Lp by singer Nestor Amaral is a repost from Loronix, which means that Zeca‘s original text about it may be found reprinted at Órfãos do Loronix.

Just an observation: The guys of the US based Golden Tone have changed the names of most of the compositions, so the identification of their composers is a problematic task. I started the identification, but gave it up.

Why it was done at all is a mystery to me…

1. Brazil (Aquarela do Brasil) (Ary Barroso)
2. Pra Que Discutir
3. Currupaco
4. Porto Alegre (Oswaldo Rieli)
5. Batucada (Luiz Bonfá)
6. Tico-Tico No Fubá (Zequinha de Abreu)

Cauby Peixoto – Ouvindo Cauby (1957)

RCA Victor BPL 3033

I am a bit in a hurry to write a long text at the moment, but at that particular day back in ’57 Elmo Barros was not…
His linear notes about singer Cauby Peixoto and this release fills every square inch of the back cover of this 10′ LP which is one of his first career albums.
I recommend reading it (if you understand Portuguese, of course).

2. Chora Cavaquinho (Valdemar de Abreu “Dunga”) Samba

Zila Fonseca – Sambas da Saudae Vol. 2 (1958)

Columbia LPCB 35054

Zilá Fonseca‘s Sambas da Saudade Vol 2 has been presented for the first time in another reality some eight years ago. At this time I mentioned in the accompanying text that logic says that where there is a volume 2, there must be also a volume 1.
So far Zilá Fonseca‘s Sambas da Saudade Vol 1 has not appeared anyplace, not even with a mention, least of all with a download link or a picture of the cover.

This mystery remained a mystery until yesterday when I received from Pedro & 300discos the same album, this time in form of a Pedro transfer and cover.

Not that the package included any clue about the missing volume 1, but it induced me to perform another search, needles to say, a fruitless one.

Frustrated, I sent a mail to my friend, the famous Belgian detective Hercule Poirot, explaining the problem that has been bothering me for such a long time.

Almost immediately, I got a reply which I will quote here:

Mon cher Milan,

It seems to me that you have been formulating the wrong question so you can not expect to get an answer.
Pourquoi? Parce qu’il n’existe pas!
There is not a first volume of Zilá Fonseca‘s Sambas da Saudade but there is a first one of Columbia‘s Sambas da Saudade series of two 10′ albums.
In fact, the “missing” album it is right under your nose:
In this parallel reality which you are trying to make decent folks believe in.
Voilà, click this link and see for yourself.

Lago Azul (1955)

While the ladies Zezé Gonzaga and Ellen de Lima are quite well known, Helena Ribeiro and Mary Duarte are not.
As you might have guessed, my passion for obscure cantoras got inflamed immediately after receiving this various artists Columbia showcase and hearing them sing and the search for more songs by them or at least more information started.
The results are as follows: Helena Ribeiro has participated on three more various artists compilations and has released two 78 rpm albums, while Mary Duarte (or Mari Duarte) has, beside the album presented today, two more various artists compilations (listed under Mari Duarte) and 12 78 rpm records from 1951 to 1956 (listed under Mary Duarte).
Possibly there is more and hopefully we will sooner of later have the chance to enjoy also other songs by both of them.

Of course, beside the four above mentioned ladies, the other four tracks are sung by four gentlemen, so the complete list looks like this:

1. Lago Azul (Waldir Rumbelsperger / Walter Gonçalves) Bolero – Ellen de Lima
2. Tu Só Tu (Carolina Cardoso de Menezes / Armando O. Fernandes) Samba-canção – Cauby Peixoto
3. Teu Olhar (Marco Antônio Prates) Samba-canção – Helena Ribeiro
4. Mar Negro (Am Schwarzen Meer) (Léo Rodi / Vrs. Haroldo Barbosa) Tango – Déo
5. Sorri (Smile) (Charles Chaplin / Geoffrey Parsons / John Turner / Vrs. João de Barro) Beguine – Ivan de Alencar
6. Sedução (Carlito / Nazareno de Brito) Samba – Zezé Gonzaga
7. Canção Sem Nome (Renato de Oliveira) Samba-canção – Carlos Henrique
8. Valsa Do Adeus (R. Burns / Vrs. Juvenal Fernandes) Valsa – Mary Duarte
